The term describes a category, not a Meta product. An AI concierge is connected to a business's phone number through the WhatsApp Business API, usually via a BSP, and grounded in that business's catalogue, policies and order data. It answers questions, suggests items and escalates to a person with the conversation context.
Versus a simple chatbot. A rule-based bot follows fixed menus and keywords. A concierge uses a language model to handle free-form questions, while staying within what the brand has approved and knows.
Versus Meta's Business AI. Meta offers its own AI features for businesses on WhatsApp. A concierge on the API is the brand's own system, with its own data, rules and handoff flow.
Policy. Meta's WhatsApp Business Solution Terms, in force from 15 January 2026, bar providers of AI technologies such as large language models and general-purpose assistants from using the platform to distribute those assistants when that is their primary functionality. Meta has said that businesses using AI for their own customer service are not the target. Regulators in Europe and Brazil challenged the rule and Meta has adjusted it regionally, so check the current terms.
Opt-in, the 24-hour window and template rules still apply.
Why it matters for brands
Customers expect fast answers in the app they already use. A business-specific concierge covers routine questions at any hour and keeps humans for judgement calls, while staying on the permitted side of Meta's policy.
