Every TikTok session opens on the For You feed, which makes FYP distribution the real currency of TikTok marketing. The recommendation system assembles each feed from signals such as user interactions (watch time, rewatches, likes, comments, shares, follows), video information (captions, sounds, hashtags, effects), and device and account settings (language, country, device type) — with strong signals, like watching a video to the end, counting more than weak ones.
Reach is earned per video. TikTok has said follower count is not a direct ranking factor: each video is evaluated on the engagement it generates with the audiences it is shown to. That is why small accounts can reach large audiences, and why brands increasingly distribute through many creator videos rather than a single owned channel.
Eligibility is a gate. Content that breaks platform rules — including branded content posted without proper disclosure — can be excluded from the For You feed even while it stays on the profile, eliminating most of its organic reach.
Why it matters for brands
On TikTok, distribution is not bought with an audience you own; it is granted video by video. Brands that win on the FYP treat every post as its own test — strong hook, high watch time, clean disclosure — because the algorithm rewards retention, not reputation.
