How it works. A dark post is built inside the ads manager rather than published to the profile grid. Only the targeted audience sees it in feed. Because the creative never touches the public profile, a brand can run a dozen hooks, headlines, or audience-specific angles simultaneously without spamming its own followers.
Why advertisers use it. Clean A/B testing is the main reason: identical budgets against different creatives, with no organic engagement muddying the read. It also allows segmented messaging — different copy for first-time buyers and lapsed customers — and keeps promotional bursts off the permanent profile.
Dark is not secret. Ad transparency rules changed the calculus. Meta's Ad Library and TikTok's Commercial Content Library, built for the EU Digital Services Act and covering the EEA, UK and Switzerland, make active commercial content publicly searchable by advertiser. Assume competitors can see it.
The opposite approach. Spark Ads invert dark posting: the ad is a real, visible post on a real account, and paid engagement accrues to that post permanently. Dark posts optimise for testing volume; Spark Ads optimise for credibility and compounding organic value.
Why it matters for brands
Dark posting is the right tool for finding a winning creative, not for building an asset. Test dark, then move proven winners onto a real handle where the engagement lasts.
